An Example of a Typical Day

Morning sessions

9:15 Children arrive - The children hang up their coats on their named peg and find their name card and hand it to the member of staff completing the register.
9:25 Registration - The children sit in a semicircle and one child shows the name cards for the children to recognise and say hello. A staff member talks about the letter of the week and explains to the children what activities they can participate in during the session.
09:30 Group time - The children divide into small groups for structured activities on various themes, such as counting, physical activity (eg. hopping, trampolining, skipping) and music.
9:45 Free choice activities - The children are given the freedom to choose what they want to do from a number of activities available. These may include gluing, painting, sand tray, play dough, role play and outdoor play. There is always a craft work activity available which all children are encouraged to do and we learn a different letter sound each week. Children can help themselves to water to drink from the water fountain.
Cafe style snack time (from 10:45) - The children wash their hands and sit down at tables for a drink of milk or water and a biscuit or piece of fruit. We discuss the weather and activities undertaken so far in the day. We also encourage simple counting eg. counting the snack being handed out.
11:20 Tidy up time - The children help tidy up the toys.
11:25 Story time - The children share stories in small groups. There is plenty of child participation, including acting out the story and following actions.
11:40 Singing, music and group activity - The children join a circle for singing, music and group games, such as The Farmer's in his Den, skittles and lotto.
11:45 Home time - The children go home.

Afternoon sessions
Activities are similar to those for morning sessions, but adapted for younger children.
